Hurricane Matthew Update 10-9-16 @ 9am

Team,

Here is the latest from Bill Sammler, Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wakefield.

“The latest Matthew Briefing is attached. Rainfall from Matthew, currently confined to the Middle Peninsula/Northern Neck and DELMARVA areas, will be ending over the next 2-4 hours.  Rainfall related flooding will persist through today on roads and tributaries, and into Tuesday on mainstem rivers in NE NC, and, in VA, along and south of Rt. 460.  [A higher resolution version of the rainfall map is also provide by Bill and is included below.]

Strong winds will persist into this afternoon, with the strongest (gusts greater than 60 mph) this morning over extreme SE VA/NE NC. Trees and power lines will be downed by these strong winds. And power outages should also be expected, especially given the saturated soils throughout the area. Winds will subside this afternoon, but still gust above 40 mph near the Bay/Ocean into this evening.

The threat for major coastal flooding has subsided, but the Lower Bay, SE VA coastal waters, and northern Outer Banks can still anticipate moderate coastal flooding through today at times of high tide. This will also be accompanied by significant wave run up and beach erosion. Coastal areas of the VA/MD Eastern Shore can expect minor coastal flooding, with significant wave run up and beach erosion. Minor to no coastal flooding is expected north of the Middle Peninsula, and north of Onancock on the Eastern Shore. This includes bayside areas of the Lower Maryland Eastern Shore.”

Hourly graph and tide charts attached for your review.  Rain still expected, possible half an inch, between now and 1pm.  While on the decline, gusts are still strong at the mid to low 50mph range.  High tide similar to this morning’s 5.8’ mark set for this afternoon at 3:45pm.

Power outages approximately 44,190, approximately ~45% of Norfolk customers affected.

Shelter was opened shelter at Norview HS yesterday evening and remains open. Visitors to the shelter are reminded to bring any medications on which they rely.  Also, pets welcome so long as owners bring the necessary crate, food, equipment and otherwise care for their animal.  Pet drop-offs are not permitted.
Parking havens still in effect

Crews are out assessing flooding and damages.  More to follow; however, please note Bramelton Ave. and Virginia Beach Blvd underpasses are completely flooded. Crews will block both underpasses, check other flooded intersections, and also inspect arterial routes.
